It's the Little Things

Dear friend,

Has someone ever done something so small for you and yet it was so touching for you? Maybe it was someone taking care of a chore you normally do, or maybe its a sweet note, or a few kid-picked wildflowers from your yard.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like you can really tell who loves you not by the grand gestures, but by the small moments. It's the moments when they come along side you and do normal life with you.

Sometimes I feel pressure when I'm planning out what I want to paint next. I think something like "I really need this one to sell, I need it to be magnificent".

Normally two things happen when I let this pressure win in my painting process. First, I no longer create freely and with joy. It feels like a chore and I feel like I've already failed before my piece is even finished. Second, my piece is normally not one I'm proud of.

The emphasis of trying to create a show-stopping painting steals the joy of creating a heartfelt painting.

Most of the sketches and drawings and paintings I've made that I'm most proud of are inspired by the small moments and little things that make me smile.

In such a fast-paced, busy world, though, it's hard to slow down and be thankful for the sweet moments. That's why we have to set out to be thankful. It's something that takes practice.

Would you join me in practicing gratitude? Let me know what you're thankful for today by replying to this email!

P.S. I'm going to start painting some small 5x7" sketches (like the last image in today's newsletter!) and offering them for sale as paper originals on my Instagram and Facebook (@isabelgracestudio). These would be a great way to own some original artwork without the cost of a canvas painting!

Dear friend, What do you think of when you think of the word "courageous"? As a kid, I tended to think of Peter Pevensie when he stands before the White Witch in battle and chooses to stand his ground and fight even though he is outmatched in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Now, I tend to think of something a little less dramatic, but no less strong. Now, I think of people who stand up to bullies. I think of people who are meek (definition of meek: strength under control). I think of...

Dear friend, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want," Psalm 23:1a I was stuck on the words "I shall not want". Does it mean "I shall not be left wanting or lacking in any need" or does it mean "I will stop wanting", I asked myself. The Messy Stage of a New Painting I began to consider other Scripture verses like Lamentations 3:24 (“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”) John 6 (Jesus feeds the 5,000), and Matthew 6:25-34 ("Consider the lilies.... "). And I...
